Intel Unveils Groundbreaking AI-Enabled Chip in Personal Computers
Intel recently announced that dozens of PC makers are now utilizing its latest AI-enabled chip, a significant leap forward in personal computing. This new chip, dubbed “Meteor Lake,” marks Intel’s first foray into integrating a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with its central processor units (CPUs).
The NPU is dedicated to handling artificial intelligence tasks, signifying a major advancement in chip technology. The new offering, available in laptops from leading manufacturers like Dell, Microsoft, and Lenovo, went on sale at Best Buy in the U.S. and other global retailers.
This development comes as Intel seeks to navigate the post-pandemic PC slump, where consumer upgrades have stagnated since the work-from-home surge in 2020. Intel aims to revitalize the market with the “AI PC,” a category it believes will comprise 80% of PCs sold within the next four years.
This strategy is set against the backdrop of a broader industry trend, with Apple and Qualcomm having included NPUs in their smartphone chips for over five years.
The move by Intel aligns with the increasing demand for AI skills across various sectors. A recent report highlighted a notable rise in AI job postings in 2022, with the information sector leading the surge. California, Texas, and New York were the top states for AI-related job postings, illustrating the growing importance of AI in the job market.
Furthermore, the U.S. government’s commitment to AI research and development has been steadily increasing. In the fiscal year 2022, U.S. government agencies allocated $1.7 billion to AI R&D, a 13% increase from the previous year and a significant 209% increase from 2018.
The Department of Defense alone requested $1.1 billion for its nonclassified AI budget, a 26% increase from the prior year, underscoring the strategic importance of AI in national defense and technological advancement.
